One way of testing your opponent's stamina and eventually outplaying them is by using the volley. Usually played closer to the net, the ball is returned before it hits the ground.
Half-Volley: This advanced stroke is an 'emergency' shot, used when you're in trouble and can't play any other shot. It is played from either mid court or the service line.
Backhand Volley: This shot is played from about 10' (3 m) from the net and requires confidence to make it.
Backhand Half-Volley: This shot is played as if you are punching the ball, with a firm wrist action.
